Sports Medicine & Rehab
Led by Dr. Britt Carr Benson, the Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center of The Animal Hospital at Liberty Highway helps maintain the medical needs of active and athletic animals and restore normal function after injury or illness.
Our team has extensive training in multiple diagnostic tools and treatments, including sports medicine assessments, rehabilitation therapy, musculoskeletal ultrasounds, regenerative medicine, and more.

Performed by Dr. Britt Carr Benson, this assessment can provide a comprehensive understanding of activities performed by and injuries likely to occur in both working and performance dogs. These therapeutic treatments optimize the healing process by decreasing inflammation and swelling, building muscle mass, increasing range of motion, and improving overall comfort. We offer a number of modalities including manual/massage therapy, laser therapy, TENS/NMES, therapeutic ultrasounds, and therapeutic exercise.
-
Musculoskeletal ultrasounds can be used to diagnose disruption of tendons and/or ligaments, muscle lesions, older injuries with scar tissue or calcification, bursitis, and tenosynovitis. It can also be used to monitor the progression of healing through the recovery period and confirm healing prior to returning to full activity.
-
Regenerative medicine therapy has become increasingly common in both humans and animals to treat osteoarthritis and soft tissue injuries. Regenerative medicine harnesses the power of the body’s own cells to promote healing. The Animal Hospital at Liberty Highway offers both platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy, and a combination of the two.
-
Managing pain is increasingly important in older patients with osteoarthritis and/or various orthopedic and neurological conditions. We offer several therapies to effectively target pain with a multimodal approach that is tailored to each individual patient.
-
Devices including orthotics (i.e., braces and wraps), prosthetics, and carts have become an integral component of many treatment plans for orthopedic and/or neurological conditions. There are multiple options for veterinary patients. We work closely with certified orthotists and prosthetists to ensure our patients have the correct orthopedic device that fits well and enables them to achieve their highest musculoskeletal potential and function in comfort. Dr. Benson has years of experience in prescribing and fitting orthopedic devices for patients and has been on the forefront of research being conducted on various orthopedic devices.
